Waldorf Astoria Ras Al Khaimah Cleans Up the Newly Discovered Pink Lake
In an effort to boost its sustainability efforts, the staff of Waldorf Astoria Ras Al Khaimah dedicated a day to clean up the Pink Lake in Ras Al Khaimah.
The hotel dedicated thirty staff to aid in the clean-up of the newly discovered ‘Pink Lake’ on the shoreline of Saraya Island in Ras Al Khaimah. With the viral phenomenon taking the UAE by storm, many residents and visitors flocked to the destination, and have left behind remnants of plastic and other environmentally harmful materials. The clean-up drive took place on March 16th.
First discovered by a UAE student in January 2021, the ‘Pink Lake’ in Ras Al Khaimah quickly gained attention from residents across the UAE. It radiates a vibrant hue, largely due to the Halobacteria and the algae Dunaliella Salina, which thrives in a salty environment.
The members collected harmful materials from around the lake, with support from Public Services Department and RAK Waste Management Authority. A total of 520 kilograms of waste was gathered.
Jan Moenkedieck, General Manager commented, “We want to protect the natural beauty of Ras Al Khaimah as much as we can, which is why we put a team in place to assist in the collection of the litter around the ‘Pink Lake’. These efforts are in alignment with Hilton’s commitment to cut its environmental footprint in half by 2030”.
