The film festival provided an opportunity to find out what colleagues are thinking about

However, I do not yet know when I will be able to start working on the picture: finding funds for the production is very, very difficult.

I have another movie in my plans. It will be dedicated to the traditional Muslim holiday "Tabaski". This is the day when Muslims perform the sacred rite of sacrifice. I conceived this film as a sociological study based on documentary material and raising a number of acute problems for the population of my country. After all, in order to celebrate this time-honored holiday with dignity, every family must get new fancy clothes, get a sheep, etc. All this is fraught with great difficulties, and the analysis of these difficulties will take a central place in the film, will become its main theme. But I must make a reservation again: and this picture of mine still exists only in dreams, I cannot say when they are destined to be realized.

The Tashkent Film Festival gave me the opportunity to find out what my colleagues in various countries are thinking, fighting for, and filming today. And I saw that we have many common problems and common interests. This is the most valuable feature of the Tashkent film screening, which brings together envoys from three continents and provides them with all the conditions for exchanging experiences, for creative discussions and conversations, for meetings with Soviet viewers and Soviet cinematographers. The program of films here, both fiction and documentary, is extremely diverse and representative, it includes a great many very powerful films that we would not be able to see at any other festival. And in our box office, films from young national cinematographies are extremely rare and accidental guests.

I was very impressed by the Soviet paintings that I was able to see during the festival. Especially "Love and Fury", a joint Soviet—Yugoslav film, and the documentary "Burqa", which temperamentally and vividly tells about the liberation of an Uzbek woman from centuries-old slavery.

I am leaving Tashkent full of hopes and plans. All of them are connected with cinema, the most powerful, the most popular art, whose capabilities were once again brilliantly demonstrated by the multinational screen of the V Tashkent Film Festival.

Akira Shimizu, critic (Japan). As a person, as a citizen and an artist, I took very personally the exciting greeting of the head of the Soviet state Leonid Brezhnev to the guests and participants of the V International Film Festival of Asia, Africa and Latin America in Tashkent.

I fully share all the provisions of this compelling and vivid document, which calls on screen artists to create works that would not only entertain viewers, but also educate them, actively helping the cause of progress and social justice.

Only serious, problematic films based on big, socially important ideas can fulfill such a lofty mission. Only such films meet the challenges facing the progressive artists of the planet today, who, as Mr. Leonid Brezhnev rightly noted, are called upon to improve the political climate, bring peoples closer together, and defeat the peace-loving forces of the earth over those who stubbornly cling to the positions of the Cold War.

"The art of the screen is designed to help solve the pressing problems of our time," Brezhnev writes in his greeting. "It can become an important factor in strengthening trust and mutual understanding between peoples and states."
