It takes five minutes. In a crisis, it could be the most important five minutes you spend.
When the situation in the Gulf escalated at the end of February, embassies across the UAE did something they rarely do: they asked their nationals to register – urgently, and en masse.
The UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office activated a dedicated crisis portal for British nationals in the UAE. The US Embassy urged American residents to enrol in its Smart Traveler Enrollment Program. European missions – German, French, Spanish, Swedish, Dutch – all issued their own registration calls within hours of each other.
For most expats, it was the first time they’d ever heard of these systems. Many didn’t know registration was even possible. Some found out through a WhatsApp message – and weren’t sure whether to believe it.
The UAE Public Prosecution warned during the crisis that publishing or circulating rumours, false news, or unverified information through social media is a violation of UAE law and could expose users to prosecution. This applies to everyone in the UAE regardless of nationality – including forwarding unverified WhatsApp messages about the security situation. Always verify before sharing.
This guide covers everything UAE residents need to know: what embassy registration actually does, how to do it for the most common nationalities in the UAE, and why it’s worth doing even when things are calm.
What Does Embassy Registration Actually Do?
Registering with your embassy puts your name, location, and contact details on file with your home government’s consular team in the UAE. In normal times, this means you’ll receive official travel advisories and safety alerts by email or SMS.
In a crisis, it means significantly more. Registered nationals are the first to receive shelter-in-place guidance, curfew notices, and – critically – instructions for government-organised evacuation flights if they become necessary. It also means emergency services and consular staff have a way to reach you and your family directly, without you having to fight through jammed phone lines.
Registration is free. It is not a guarantee of evacuation or rescue. But it puts you on the list – and in a fast-moving situation, being on the list matters.
A Note on WhatsApp Misinformation
During the recent crisis, a viral WhatsApp message circulated among Indian expats in the UAE claiming the Indian Embassy in Abu Dhabi had issued an urgent instruction to register. The message spread rapidly through community groups.
Gulf News confirmed that the Indian Embassy in Abu Dhabi had not issued any such instruction in connection with the conflict. The viral link was an existing long-standing database that Indian missions maintain globally – not a crisis-specific registration system.
The Indian Embassy urged expats to avoid rumours and rely only on official communication from the Embassy in Abu Dhabi or the Consulate in Dubai.
This is worth knowing because it illustrates two things: the hunger for reliable information during a crisis, and the speed at which misinformation spreads. For every nationality – always go directly to your embassy’s official website or verified social media handles. Do not act on forwarded WhatsApp messages alone.

🇬🇧 British Nationals
On 1 March 2026, the FCDO launched a dedicated crisis portal allowing British nationals in the UAE to register their presence. The system asks for passport details, location, and next-of-kin contacts, and subsequently sends SMS and email alerts including shelter-in-place guidance and, if required, instructions for government-organised flights.
Register at: register.service.csd.fcdo.gov.uk (Search “register your presence” on GOV.UK if the link has changed)

The British Embassy acknowledged that some nationals were experiencing difficulty getting through during peak periods and advised people to keep trying or visit GOV.UK directly.
🇮🇳 Indian Nationals
The Indian Embassy in Abu Dhabi and the Indian Consulate in Dubai maintain a registration database for Indian nationals living abroad. Unlike some other countries, India does not currently operate a crisis-specific dynamic registration portal — but registration with the mission is still encouraged.

🇺🇸 American Nationals
The Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) is a free service from the US Department of State that allows American citizens and nationals living or travelling abroad to register with the nearest US embassy or consulate. Once enrolled, you receive safety alerts and the embassy can contact you or your emergency contact in a crisis.
Following the launch of US combat operations in Iran, the US Embassy in Abu Dhabi urged Americans in the UAE to enrol in STEP and complete the online crisis intake form.

Russians were asked to register with the consulate if possible, and to follow updates through the Consulate General’s official Telegram channel, the Embassy website and Telegram, and the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs channels. Register at: mofa.gov.ae or search “Tawajudi” on the App Store / Google Play MoFA hotline: 800-44444
What Information You’ll Typically Need
When registering, most embassy systems will ask for:
- Full name and passport number
- Current address in the UAE
- UAE phone number and email address
- Emergency contact details (next of kin, ideally someone outside the UAE)
- Employer name (optional for some systems)
Keep your passport details handy before you start. Most registrations take under 10 minutes.
What Registration Does Not Do
It’s important to be clear about the limits. Embassy registration:
- Does not guarantee evacuation or rescue
- Does not override the need for valid insurance
- Does not mean your embassy can compel airlines to hold flights
- Does not give you legal status or extend your visa automatically
Legal advisers have underlined that registration does not override individual responsibility to hold valid insurance or follow local authority orders, nor is it a guarantee of repatriation. It is one layer of preparedness — an important one, but not a substitute for the others.

Do It Now, Not Later
The lesson from the past two weeks is simple: the time to register is before a crisis, not during one. When tensions escalated, registration portals crashed under demand. Phone lines were jammed. People who had never thought about it suddenly urgently needed to.
If you’re reading this during a period of relative calm — that’s exactly the right time. It takes five minutes. Once you’re registered, keep your details updated if you move address or change phone numbers.
If you haven’t already reviewed your insurance cover alongside this, read our guide on war risk insurance for UAE residents — it covers the gaps most expats don’t know about until it’s too late.
