The Sharjah International Film Festival for Children and Youth (SIFF) celebrated the grand opening of its 11th edition on Sunday, October 6, 2024. Held under the esteemed patronage of Her Highness Sheikha Jawaher bint Mohammed Al Qasimi, wife of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, the festival continues to be a beacon of creativity, focused on nurturing the next generation of filmmakers and promoting cultural awareness through cinema.
This year’s festival not only serves as a platform for showcasing international talent but also pays special tribute to Palestine, the first-ever Guest of Honor at the festival. The Guest of Honor initiative, which debuts this year, shines a spotlight on Palestine‘s rich cultural and cinematic contributions. In attendance were Sheikh Fahim bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Head of the Department of Government Relations in Sharjah, and Sheikha Jawaher bint Abdullah Al Qasimi, Director General of the Fann Foundation and the festival itself. The ceremony was graced by the presence of some of the most celebrated figures in Arab cinema, including Yousra, Huda Hussein, Jaber Naghmoush, Ahmed Al Jasmi, and Shajoun, who have all played instrumental roles in elevating Arab cinema to new heights.
During the ceremony, Sheikha Jawaher bint Abdullah Al Qasimi delivered a moving speech emphasizing Sharjah’s commitment to nurturing a generation of filmmakers grounded in cultural heritage and societal values. She highlighted the importance of supporting young filmmakers and providing them with platforms to express their creativity and contribute to the global cinema community.

This year, Zimbabwe makes its debut at the festival, joining the ranks of other participating nations such as Oman, Egypt, France, Iran, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, Spain, and Germany.
The festival will see the premiere of three films on its Green Carpet platform:
- Amakor, a Kuwaiti film directed by Ahmed Al-Khodary and starring Khaled Amin and Samah Hussein.
- The Teacher, directed by Farah Nabulsi.
- Diplodocus, an adventure film co-produced by Slovakia, the Czech Republic, and Poland.
These films represent a range of genres, from drama to adventure, showcasing the artistic diversity of international filmmakers.
Lifetime Achievement Honors
A highlight of the festival was the awarding of Lifetime Achievement Awards to Jaber Naghmoush, Huda Hussein, and Yousra. These influential figures have left an indelible mark on the Arab arts, and their contributions to drama, theater, and film have enriched Arab culture for generations.
