The Ras Al Khaimah Tourism Development Authority (RAKTDA) is excited to announce the return of the HIGHLANDER Adventure, organized by HIGHLANDER, the world’s largest international hiking association. Scheduled to take place from 7-9 February 2025, this premier long-distance hiking challenge will allow hikers and adventure enthusiasts to explore the breathtaking trails of Jebel Jais, home to the UAE’s longest-developed network of hiking trails, spanning 80km.
A Journey Through Heritage and History
What sets this challenge apart is the unique opportunity to hike through historical and cultural landscapes, discovering old Emirati settlements and active farms that showcase the rich history and diversity of Ras Al Khaimah. This journey highlights how communities have thrived in this rocky region for centuries, offering a deep connection with the past while enjoying the natural beauty of the present.
Three Signature Formats for Every Adventurer
Building on the success of previous editions, the 2025 HIGHLANDER Adventure will feature three signature formats designed to cater to different levels of hiking enthusiasts:
HIGHLANDER Pegasus: The Ultimate 40km Challenge
The HIGHLANDER Pegasus is a 40km three-day backpacking challenge from 7-9 February, named after the winged horse of Greek mythology and the constellation visible in the northern sky. This format requires participants to carry all essential gear—including camping, hiking, and cooking equipment—in their backpacks for the event. Each night, hikers will camp under the stars, using the tents they bring along, fully immersing themselves in the rugged beauty of Ras Al Khaimah’s stunning mountain landscape.
HIGHLANDER Orion: A 25km Two-Day Trek
The HIGHLANDER Orion is a 25km trek over two days from 8-9 February, inspired by the prominent set of stars visible during winter in the northern celestial hemisphere. This challenge offers a multi-day hiking experience in true backpacking style, with participants carrying all essential gear and camping under the stars each night. It’s a perfect adventure for those seeking a shorter, equally immersive hiking experience.
Introducing HIGHLANDER Lyra: A 20km One-Day Adventure
New to this year’s event is the HIGHLANDER Lyra, a 20km challenge in a single day on 9 February. Named after the harmonious Lyre in Greek mythology and one of the smallest constellations, this format is ideal for those new to long-distance hiking or looking to test their skills and stamina on a shorter, less demanding route. Participants will carry only essential gear for a day hike, making it an excellent introduction to HIGHLANDER Adventures.
Embrace the HIGHLANDER Adventure Tribe
All three challenges will be held under the expert supervision of the organizers, providing participants with the chance to immerse themselves in the HIGHLANDER Adventure tribe. This community of like-minded international adventure lovers and outdoor enthusiasts will traverse old settlements and active farms, highlighting Ras Al Khaimah’s rich history and cultural diversity.
