Healthcare is one of the first things expats ask about before moving to RAK, and one of the first things they stop worrying about once they arrive. The emirate has improved enormously in the last 5 years. Here is exactly what you need to know in 2026.
WOW-RAK Expert Tip: In a real medical emergency, dial 998 for ambulance or 999 for police. Both work from any UAE mobile, even without credit.

Public vs Private Healthcare in RAK
RAK runs a two-tier system, like the rest of the UAE. Public hospitals are operated by the Ministry of Health and Prevention (MOHAP) and accept the Thiqa card for nationals plus subsidised care for residents. Private hospitals run on insurance or self-pay.
Most expats end up using private healthcare for everything except major emergencies. The waits are shorter, the doctors speak English fluently and your insurance covers it.
Best Hospitals in RAK
RAK Hospital (Private)
Located in Al Qusaidat, near the airport. JCI accredited, full multi-specialty, 24/7 ER, maternity unit, ICU, advanced imaging. The default choice for most expats. Direct billing with all major UAE insurers.
Best for: Maternity, surgery, paediatrics, planned procedures.
Saqr Hospital (Public)
The main public hospital in RAK, in Al Nakheel. Free or subsidised care for nationals, low-cost care for residents on a MOHAP card. Excellent emergency department, strong cardiology unit. Waits are longer than private.
Best for: Emergencies, complex cases, when budget matters.
Sheikh Khalifa Specialty Hospital
Tertiary care hospital with cancer treatment, neurology, advanced cardiac surgery. Government-run, free for nationals, self-pay or insurance for expats. The most advanced facility in the emirate.
Aster Hospital RAK
Part of the Aster network. Mid-sized private hospital, strong outpatient and pharmacy integration, popular with Indian expat families.
RAK Medical and Health Sciences University Hospital

Health Insurance: What You Need to Know
Health insurance is mandatory for all UAE residents. Your sponsor (employer or family member) is legally required to provide it. If you are self-sponsored, you must buy it yourself.
Typical Insurance Costs (2026)
| Plan Level | Adult Annual | Child Annual | Coverage |
| Basic (DHA-compliant) | AED 2,500 – 3,500 | AED 2,000 – 2,800 | Local network only |
| Mid-tier | AED 5,500 – 8,500 | AED 4,000 – 6,500 | UAE-wide network |
| Comprehensive | AED 9,000 – 16,000 | AED 7,000 – 12,000 | UAE plus elective abroad |
| International | AED 18,000 + | AED 14,000 + | Worldwide cover |
WOW-RAK Expert Tip: If your employer offers a basic plan, ask if you can pay the upgrade difference for a mid-tier one. The jump in network coverage is usually worth it.

- Aster Pharmacy, Al Nakheel – 24/7
- Life Pharmacy, Al Hamra Mall – until 1am

Maternity Care in RAK
RAK Hospital and Saqr Hospital both run full maternity units. RAK Hospital is the more popular choice for expats, with private rooms, English-speaking obstetricians and lactation consultants. Total cost for a normal delivery with a 2-night stay runs around AED 18,000 to 25,000 if self-paying. Most insurance plans cover it after a 12-month waiting period.
Mental Health Services
Mental health support has improved significantly. RAK Hospital has psychiatric outpatient services. For ongoing therapy, most expats use Sharjah or Dubai-based providers, many of whom now offer secure video sessions covered by mid-tier insurance.
WOW-RAK Expert Tip: If you are in crisis, call the UAE Mental Health hotline on 800-HOPE (800-4673). It is free, confidential and available 24/7.
Dental Care
Dental clinics are everywhere in RAK and most are excellent value. Aster Dental, Dr Joy Dental and the dental wings at RAK Hospital are reliable. A basic check-up and clean costs AED 250 to 450 self-pay. Most insurance plans include dental as an optional add-on.
Vaccinations and Children’s Health
MOHAP runs the national childhood vaccination programme free at public clinics regardless of residency status. Private paediatricians at RAK Hospital and Aster also offer the full schedule, billed to insurance or self-pay.
Travelling for Treatment: When to Go to Dubai
RAK handles 95 percent of medical needs locally. The exceptions where most people travel to Dubai or Abu Dhabi are: rare cancers, complex paediatric surgery, certain fertility treatments and very specialist neurology. Even then, most consultants now do video consults first.

How to Register with a Doctor in RAK
Walk in. RAK clinics do not use the GP-registration model you might be familiar with from the UK or Australia. You simply book at any clinic in your insurance network and they create a file. Repeat visits build a history at that clinic.
- Call ahead or use the Aster or RAK Hospital app to book
- Bring your Emirates ID and insurance card
- Most clinics offer same-day or next-day appointments
- Specialists usually have a 2 to 7 day wait
