5 Facts about Speed Radars you didn’t know

The speed radars have become important part of our commuting while on Ras Al Khaimah roads (to an extent that we even talk to them).

We all know that if we cross them while violating the speed limit, we are most likely to get fine. But did you know that these cameras have become more sophisticated with new technology that they can capture a video, follow you, capture even if you are not clearly visible.

Although all functions may not be used all the time, but knowing their capabilities might make you think twice before violating any traffic rule in Ras Al Khaimah.

1. Nothing is invisible for camera

A common myth that license may not get captured if the violating vehicle was invisible behind a large truck. The radar is installed in such a way that every lane is measured separately, and thus the speed of every vehicle is recorded individually.

If a vehicle was not visible at the time of passing the radar, it can follow the car until it is visible, since it will eventually appear on the camera’s eye

2. The Radar observes you

Yes, the radar can see what driver is doing. This includes talking on phone, reading SMS, not wearing seat belts etc.

Currently, it might just notify its observations without leading to fine, but who knows, it can definitely be done if desired.

3. The Radar captures even on secondary roads

Opposite to a common perception that a highway radar captures only the vehicles violating on highway,  the speed radar monitors the highway lanes, as well as service lanes, exit roads or any other road structures in the vicinity.

4. The Radar can follow you

If you are a regular commuter, you probably know where radars are installed. So you slow down as you pass the radar and resume speed as soon as you have safely crossed the radar.

Don’t be so sure, if needed,  the radar can follow a car for a while and snap the shot at a distance of 100-150 meters away from the radar. The camera can capture a speeding car at the same distance approaching the radar

5. Not only stills

The speed radar not only includes a still camera that snaps pictures when needed. The equipment is capable to shoot a video too.

When a motorist behaves strangely, causes an accident, is wanted or followed; in all these cases footage is readily available to the authorities.

Not all these functions may be used, and the speed radar primarily exists to change the way people behave on the road, rather than to penalize it
