RAS AL KHAIMAH – A FASCINATING PLACE FOR NATURE LOVERS.
HIGHLANDER55 Ras Al Khaimah, UAE is a 51km hiking experience that lasts for 3 days and takes you through the breathtaking landscape of the Hajar (rocky) mountain range.
Our Highlander adventure will take place at the UAE’s highest peak, Jebel Jais, which is part of the spectacular Hajar mountain range that was formed over 70 million years ago in the eastern part of Ras Al Khaimah, United Arab Emirates and Oman. Towering at 1,934 m above sea level, Jebel Jais boasts breath-taking vistas and thrilling adventures that will leave you in awe.
Jebel Jais mountain is home to a number of mountain goats, camels, foxes, wildcats as well as hundreds of bird species. After the early winter rains of November, the mountains of Ras Al Khaimah burst into colour with purple lilies, wild irises and white daisies. The Sidr tree, highly appreciated for its medical use, can also be found in the Wadis. Its pollen also attracts bees that produce excellent mountain honey.
One the first day, the start of Highlander Ras Al Khaimah will take place close to the seafront at Wadi Ghalilah Dam. The hike will start with a gentle walk through the wadi bed leading to an ascend through the renowned Stairway to Heaven trail which is known to be one of the toughest trails in UAE due to its steep elevation gain. This trail is sure to test your determination and will with its steep ascend from the bottom of the wadi to the highest point at around 1,900m above sea level. However, the route itself is not technical as you follow a well-marked trail with the availability of several resting stops. The reward is the majestic views from the top overlooking neighbouring country Oman and the coastal beaches of Ras Al Khaimah. Day one will come to an end at the Highest Camp in UAE at an altitude of 1,700m above sea level.
From hereafter, the over trail on day two is a descent towards the lower parts of Jebel Jais. What is exciting about day two is that it offers new trails that will welcome visitors for the first time. These untouched terrains will take us across the rocky ridges of the western side of Jebel jais overlooking the coastal side of Rams popular for its mangroves, beach and the old city. Views from an attitude of 1,400m that is sure to leave you in awe. We end our day at one of the hidden gems in UAE within an old settlement popular for its terraces that turn green after rain.
