Lia Staehlin, grew up surrounded by fairytale castles, towering mountains and seemingly infinite lakes in Schwaben, Germany. As a child, Staehlin was fascinated by the fantasies surrounding princes and princesses of an oriental world and mysterious tales in the 1001 Arabian Nights. She always dreamt that one day, she would create jewellery fit for a princess…
Having completed an intensive goldsmith scholarship under master goldsmith Gudrun Haefner and jewellers Schwer, Staehlin was awarded “Best Goldsmith in Schwaben”. Staehlin continued her education and studied jewellery design at Fachhochschule Pforzheim School of Design. “Angels”, the piece she created for her final diploma in “Spiritual Healing Jewellery for the 21st Century”, won her the JNWS award in Tokyo, Japan.
Staehlin’s dream did come true. She was commissioned by a princess in the UAE to create a customised jewellery set inspired by her favourite flower – the orchid. Her use of luminescent Ras Al Khaimah pearls and clear white diamonds won her an award at the International Jewellery Week Awards 2012, Dubai.
Based equally between the Waldorf Astoria Ras Al Khaimah and her studio in the oldest part of Dubai, she seeks her inspiration from both the hustle and bustle of the city and the peace and tranquillity of the mountains northern-most Emirate.
Staehlin’s approach to jewellery is that of an artist. She works with a variety media including magical Arabian horse hair, the radiant Ras Al Khaimah pearl, precious stones and the classic precious metals, gold and silver.
Each piece is fashioned in her historic studio in the Emirates’ heart of art, Bastakyia in the tradition of perfection that characterises German craftsmanship.
