Traditional Emirati camel racing on a 10km sand circuit at Al Sawan, about 30 minutes south of downtown, and it is free to watch. The robot jockeys, the 4x4s tearing alongside the track, the early-morning crowd, it is a genuine slice of the culture most visitors never see. Racing season runs September to April, with the main races on Fridays. Turn up early and look for the dust.
